For many years there were parts of America seen as being ‘off limits’ to marijuana reform. Also for many years Republicans were the leading cause for that perception, as they tended to lead the charge in favor of prohibition. While that’s still the case to some extend, it’s less so now more than ever before. A perfect example of that is the State of Tennessee where Republicans plan on introducing a medical marijuana bill in 2017. Per The Tennessean:
Medical marijuana will again become a topic of discussion and legislation during the 2017 legislative session.
An announcement from the House Republican Caucus on Friday said an official announcement will come next week from state Rep. Jeremy Faison, R-Cosby, and Sen. Steve Dickerson, R-Nashville, who are planning to introduce legislation about medical marijuana.
Medical marijuana has been a popular discussion within the legislature in recent years, and support from both parties has been steadily growing. Details about the legislation were not immediately clear.
Only time will tell if the bill has any chance of passing. I would argue that such a bill has a better chance now than at any other time in Tennessee’s history. I’m very curious to see what type of bill is put forth. Tennessee already has an unworkable CBD-only law on the books, so I would assume what is going to be introduced will be a significant improvement on the what is currently out there. Louisiana, Arkansas, and Florida have already legalized medical marijuana in the South, with Louisiana having the most strict law of the three, although none of the three allow home cultivation.
