If you prefer eating rather than smoking, or just like to play around in the kitchen, the first step in making most pot edibles is learning how to make cannabis butter or oil. Here’s how to do it.
When you’re cooking with pot, you’ll need to make sure that it is properly decarboxylated, which just means applying the right amount of heat for the right amount of time to make sure that the THC acid in your weed is converted to plain THC. As High Times points out, you’re basically aiming at getting it up to about 250ºF for about an hour.
When making cannabis oil or cannabis butter, the process is about the same. You’ll need 1:16 ratio of pot to fat, whether it’s oil or butter. So, for 1 stick of butter (4 ounces), you’ll need 1/4 ounce of pot. You can use salted or unsalted butter, depending on what you’ll be doing with it, or any type of oil you like. And, of course, feel free to play with that ratio as you gain some experience.
On low heat, melt the butter or warm the oil in a saucepan and add in your pot (finely ground or loose shake will do the job). Simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring frequently, and then strain it through cheesecloth into a glass jar. You can refrigerate or freeze it until you’re ready to use it. Discard the leftover plant material because you’ve gotten out of it pretty much everything it has to give at this point.
If you make enough of the stuff, or just don’t like standing over the stove, there’s even a gadget that will do most of the work for you.
As for what you do with your new butter or oil, that’s up to you. You can really use it in almost any dish that calls for fats. But here are a couple of places with recipes to get you started.
