Cannabis has become an integral part of healthcare regiments for ex-athletes dealing with chronic pain and the repercussions of head trauma.
For Darren McCarty, who spent 15 years in the NHL, the cannabis plant has become a priority. “This plant saved my life. Mind, body, and soul. I want everyone to know there are options and it could save their life too,” he says.
McCarty has been open about his struggles with addiction, mental disabilities, and concussion injuries. Since using medical cannabis he has been alcohol and opioid free.
“Freedom of choice means freedom of choice. It’s not about if you do or don’t, but having all the information and options to make whatever that choice is. This is what has worked for me, maybe others can take something away from my experience,” stated McCarty, who is an active cannabis industry advocate.
McCarty will be joined by other former athletes and patients at the WMCCExpo, including:
- Ricky Williams, Heisman Trophy Winner and former NFL player
- Eben Britton, Athletes For CARE ambassador, Former NFL offensive linesman
- Todd Herremans, Athletes For CARE ambassador, Former NFL offensive guard
- Nate Jackson, Athletes For CARE ambassador, Former NFL player and published author of Slow Getting Up: A Story of NFL Survival from the Bottom of the Pile and Fantasy Man
